San Martin Ramirez Delivers In Win Against UNLV

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Valeska San Martin Ramirez rallied after dropping the first set and went on to win a thriller against UNLV's Adi Bitton, giving Iowa State (2-2) a 4-3 win Friday afternoon at the Fertitta Tennis Complex.

San Martin Ramirez dropped the opening set by a 6-2 score before equalizing the match with a 6-4 victory in the second set.

In the deciding third set, the Cyclone and Rebel opponents battled back-and-forth before San Martin Ramirez earned a 7-6 (4) win and clinched the match. It was the ISU junior's first match-clinching victory of the season and the third of her career.

UNLV (4-0) got things started with 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.

Iowa State tied things up with a pair of victories on court two and three during singles action. Stanislava Shulzhenko beat Hudson Hawkins in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-3.

UNLV split the Cyclone wins with one of their own at No. 4 singles as Eszter Kis-Czako handed Alicia Dale her first dual loss of the season, 7-5, 6-3.

ISU responded with a 6-4, 6-4 win by Mari Paz Alberto Vilar over Nikol Mircheva, knotting things up at 2-2.

The Cyclones went ahead 3-2 with a come-from-behind win from Suzanie Pretorius at No. 5 singles. Pretorius faced Kaho Oyama, dropping the opening set 6-3 before rallying and taking the last two 6-1 and 6-3.

UNLV's Veronika Kliuch sent the match to 3-3 with a 7-5, 4-6, 6-2 win over ISU's Ashlee Narker at the top slot, leaving things up to court six's match between her teammate San Martin Ramirez and the Rebels' Bitton.

Iowa State returns home next weekend to host a pair of Big Ten foes beginning with Illinois on Friday at 4 p.m. On Sunday, the Cyclones will host the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series at 11 a.m., looking to defeat the Hawkeyes for the fifth time in the last six seasons.
