FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Three Cyclones earned their spots at NCAA Championships, while two advanced to quarterfinals as the women began competition. ISU now totals five national qualifiers two days into NCAA West Prelims.
Sydney Willits booked her trip to NCAA Championships in the long jump, advancing with an 11th-place finish of 20-10 (6.35m). The senior moved up to a nationals-qualifying spot on her third and final round with the mark and remained in a qualifying position as the remaining jumpers took their final attempt.
It is Willits' third ticket to NCAA Championships, with two of them outdoors.
The 10,000m ended the night, with two Cyclones punching their tickets to NCAA Championships. Mercyline Kirwa took fourth in the loaded field, while Betty Kipkore finished next in fifth. Both freshman will take their second trip to nationals after becoming track All-Americans at this season's indoor championships.
Rachel Joseph posted the fastest time through the six heats in the first round of the 400m, cruising to yet another sub-51 time with 50.25 for the advancement to quarterfinals. It is the second-fastest time of Joseph's career, while the top 30 400m times in Iowa State history are now owned by the star.
Makayla Clark raced right after and made her quarterfinal with her 800m heat finish taking second, with the top three automatically advancing. Clark went 2:02.48 to make her third-straight regional final. The time went on to stand as the second fastest in the first round.
Candra King missed out on advancement to nationals by one spot in the hammer throw, having a best mark of 204-8 to take 13th with the 12th-place mark being 208-5. King ends a stellar sophomore season with the hammer throw school record, a No. 2-ISU ranking in the weight throw and two silver Big 12 medals.
Iowa State's first event tomorrow begins at 1 p.m. with the men's discus. It is the final day to qualify for nationals for the men, while the women wrap competition Saturday.
