David Irving enters his second season as the technical coordination for player development after joining Iowa State in 2024. As technical coordinator, Irving handles Iowa State volleyball's video and scouting duties.
Irving comes to Iowa State following a season at West Virginia. Prior to West Virginia, Irving spent 2022 as the director of operations at Bowling Green. Irving served as the head men's volleyball coach at Simpson University in 2019-21, where he helped found the team and led the Red Hawks to receive votes in the NAIA national rankings in his second season. Three First Team and four Second Team All-Conference honorees were produced under Irving. He also helped create the strength and conditioning program and taught kinesiology courses.
Following a season as the interim head coach for the Chico State women's team, Irving spent two seasons as an assistant coach and statistical analyst at Chico State in California while leading the club team, taking the women to a league championship.
Before coaching for the Wildcats, Irving gained administrative experience as the men's liaison for the Southern California Collegiate Volleyball League. From 2016-18, Irving served as the head coach of the men's club team at Sonoma State, leading them to ninth place finishes in the nation in 2017 and 2018. Here, he also worked as an adapted physical education specialist for the Santa Rosa School District, working with students with disabilities.
His start in coaching began at Butte College where he spent a year as an assistant volleyball coach and strength and conditioning coach.
Irving spent his playing career as a pin hitter at Azusa Pacific. In 2010 the Azusa Pacific men's club team competed at the National Collegiate Volleyball Federation national tournament and finished fifth in the nation in Division II. Later Irving went on to play for the Chico State men's club team, where he played outside hitter, libero and setter, with the team placing 21st in the nation at the national tournament in Division I.
Irving earned his bachelor's in physical education from Azusa Pacific, where he also coached the women's club team and spent summers coaching volleyball camps around the country with Gold Medal Squared. Irving also picked up his master's in kinesiology at Chico State and completed his teaching credential in adapted physical education in 2016.
