AMES, Iowa--June Henley ran for 225 yards and three touchdowns and Ben Rutz threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Byrd with 2:13 remaining to lift Kansas to a 34-31 victory over Iowa State in a Big 12 Conference clash.
On 4th-and-2 from the Iowa State 8, Rutz found Byrd on the right side of the field for the game winner.
Henley, re-instated to the team after serving a one-game suspension following a drunken driving arrest, outdueled counterpart Troy Davis of Iowa State, who finished with 173 rushing yards and a score.
Kansas (4-4, 2-3 Big 12 North Division) had taken a 27-25 lead with 9:56 to play on a 51-yard field goal by Jeff McCord, but the Cyclones (2-6, 1-4 North) took the lead back on Dawan Anderson's 29-yard interception return with 6:07 left.
Henley opened the scoring with a five-yard run 4:48 into the game, but Iowa State quarterback Todd Doxzon scampered 14 yards for a 7-6 lead. The Jayhawks took a 12-7 lead on a six-yard jaunt by Mark Sanders.
Davis put the Cyclones back on top again with a one-yard plunge, and Jamie Kohl extended the lead to 16-12 with a 41-yard field goal with 6:16 left. Henley answered with an 11-yard scoring run to give Kansas an 18-16 lead with 40 seconds remaining, but Kohl was able to squeeze in a 48-yard field goal before the gun for a 19-18 halftime lead for Iowa State.
Kansas took a 24-19 lead 4:33 into the second half on a one-yard plunge by Henley, but Iowa State regained the lead, 25-24, on a 21-yard fumble return for a score by Tracy Williams with 13:19 to play.
Davis has rushed for 1,615 yards this season.
