AMES, Iowa - Tavian Banks scored four touchdowns for the second straight game and Tim Dwight caught eight passes for 157 yards and three scores as 13th-ranked Iowa rolled to its 15th consecutive win over Iowa State, 63-20.
Banks rushed for 127 yards on 20 carries, one week after gaining a school-record 314 yards and scoring four times in a 54-16 rout of Tulsa. In three games this season, he has amassed 644 yards and 10 touchdowns on 67 carries.
The victory came in Iowa coach Hayden Fry's 400th game and gave the Hawkeyes (3-0) a 33-12 lead in the all-time series. In opening with three wins, Iowa has outscored its opponents, 183-36.
"We made big play after big play," said Fry. "Tim Dwight did a good job of getting open. I thought Matt Sherman had a wonderful day. Tavian touched the ball 20 times. (Iowa State) did a good job keying on him, but that opened up our passing game. I'm very happy with our offense. We were very versatile."
Banks rambled 82 yards for a touchdown in the opening minute to put the Hawkeyes ahead for good. In last year's 38-13 victory over Iowa State, he had 182 yards and three scores, including an 89-yard touchdown on the final play of the first quarter.
Banks also scored on runs of eight and one yard as Iowa built a 21-0 lead with just under 10 minutes to go in the second quarter.
"We're ready for the Big Ten, they better be ready for us," Banks said. "Personally, I'm disappointed in my yard production, but I think they were really trying to stop me. They stacked the defense to stop the run. They showed us some looks that messed us up a little, but we adjusted and made some great plays passing."
Dwight took over, hauling in touchdown passes of 41 and 29 yards from Matt Sherman, who was 12-of-17 for 257 yards.
"We needed to get this win to get ready for Big Ten play," Sherman said. "We wanted to set the pace early and we did what we needed to do to get the first score. Iowa State did a great job of shutting down our running game today."
Iowa State (0-4) got on the board before halftime on Todd Bandhauer's 11-yard TD pass to Andy Stensrud with 1:18 to go in the second quarter. The extra-point was no good, leaving Iowa with a 35-6 lead at the break.
In the third quarter, Sherman and Dwight hooked up for their third touchdown, a 33-yard strike that followed defensive end Jeff Kramer's 20-yard interception return.
Kramer recovered a fumble by Bandhauer two plays after Dwight's TD catch and Banks went off right tackle from four yards out for his fourth score and a 49-6 lead.
Bandhauer hit Stensrud again for a five-yard touchdown, but Kerry Cooks stopped Iowa State's next drive by returning an interception 30 yards for a touchdown that boosted the Hawkeyes' advantage to 56-13 at the end of the third quarter.
Each team added a touchdown in the final period. Bandhauer, who was 26-of-51 for 375 yards, found Tyrone Watley for a 30-yard score before Iowa's Randy Reiners threw an eight-yard TD to Damon Gibson.
Iowa is 14-3 on the road against Iowa State, which has not beaten the Hawkeyes since 1982. During its current winning streak against the Cyclones, Iowa has outscored ISU, 590-206.
"I don't see any weaknesses," Iowa State coach Dan McCarney said of the Hawkeyes. "They just have an outstanding, veteran, confident, big-play football team. Obviously, turnovers hurt us. Basically, we had four turnovers that led to touchdowns for Iowa and they sure took advantage of that.
"We were totally dominated by Iowa and congratulations to them," he added. "I really and truly hope they can go on and win the Rose Bowl for Hayden Fry. He deserves it."
