LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas swept Iowa State in a doubleheader this afternoon, 4-2, 3-0, in Lawrence, Kan. The Jayhawks scored four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth in the first game, then shut-out Iowa State in the night cap, 3-0.
The Cyclones took an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second when Jessica Polo walked and advanced to second on a Amberly Lessenger bunt. ISU scored its first run on a double steal after Polo stole third and Lessenger stole second. An RBI single by Kimi Yoshizawa made it 2-0.
KU scored four unanswered runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jayhawk Amy Hulse reached on an error by Polo and advanced to third on an Courtney Wright single. Cyclone hurler Jen Bice walked Megan Urquhart to load the bases followed by a three run double by Christy McPhail that scored Hulse, Wright and Urquhart to make it, 3-2. McPhail scored on an error to give Kansas the 4-2 edge.
Lessenger went 2-of-2 at the plate, Yoshizawa was 1-of-2 with one RBI. Lisa Frank, Michelle Junod, Lauren Cathey and Polo each contributed a hit. Bice allowed four runs on four hits, while striking out two.
Kansas took an early 2-0 lead in the night cap when McPhail singled and advanced to second on a Stanwix sacrifice hit. Heather Sims reached on an error and McPhail advanced to third. Katie Malone tripled to right field to bring in McPhail and Sims to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. The Jayhawks added another run in the bottom of the fourth. Stanwix singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Stanwix later scored on a Sims RBI double to make it, 3-0.
Jill Hlavacek was 1-of-2 at the plate while Polo, Cinnamon Gooding and Robyn Riedler each contributed a hit. Bice took the loss, through 1 1/3 innings. The freshman allowed two runs on three hits. Reliever Mandy Loushin allowed one run on five hits, while fanning two.
The Cyclones return to action playing host Creighton in a non-conference game Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the Southwest Athletic Complex. Iowa State is 15-23 overall and 3-12 in the Big 12.
