AMES, Iowa - Sophomore Lauren Cathey was 2-of-3 at the plate with two RBI's, in the Cyclones' 3-2 loss to Creighton Tuesday at the Southwest Athletic Complex. Iowa State falls to 15-24 overall.
Creighton took a 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth when Emily Townsend hit a solo home run. The Blue Jays added two more runs in the top of the seventh to expand the lead. DeAnn Kaster singled to center field and advanced to second on a Francesca Nix single. Rebecca Goodspeed singled to load the bases. A two run double by pinch hitter Tammi Spiezio drove in Kaster and Nix for a 3-0 Creighton lead.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Cyclone senior Robyn Riedler doubled to start the Cyclone rally. Riedler advanced to second when Creighton hurler Kristan Melton walked designated player Cinnamon Gooding. A double by Cathey scored Riedler and pinch runner Amy Crittendon to cut the lead to 3-2. The Cyclone rally came up short when Laura Browning popped up to Creighton third baseman Sami Herbster to end the game.
Sophomore Amberly Lessenger was 2-of-3 for Iowa State, while Michelle Junod, Riedler and Gooding each contributed a hit. Freshman Jen Bice (8-8) took the loss for Iowa State, allowing three runs on seven hits, while fanning four.
The Cyclones return to action at 4 p.m. Wednesday when they play host to Iowa at the Southwest Athletic Complex at 4 p.m.
