IOWA CITY, Iowa - Sage Rosenfels passed for 228 yards and rushed for two touchdowns as Iowa State beat Iowa 24-14 on Saturday to improve to 3-0.
The victory is the Cyclones' third straight in the series, their longest winning streak against the Hawkeyes since 1980-82.
Iowa (0-3) leads the rivalry, which began in 1894, 33-15. The win also marks only the second time Iowa State has won back-to-back games in Kinnick Stadium since 1980 and 1982.
Rosenfels completed 17 of 26 passes, and his 5-yard touchdown run with 5:05 remaining gave the Cyclones much-needed breathing room and provided the final margin of victory.
Scott Mullen was 22-of-41 for 235 yards and two touchdowns for Iowa, which has lost 11 consecutive games.
Rosenfels put the Cyclones ahead 17-7 midway through the third quarter with a 1-yard leap on an option keeper. The key play on the eight-play, 57-yard drive was Rosenfels' 30-yard pass to J.J. Moses that gave Iowa State the ball at the Iowa 16.
Rosenfels ran for 59 yards on 12 carries.
Rosenfels, a senior from Maquoketa, had one throw picked off, and on Iowa's ensuing possession, the Hawkeyes scored to cut the lead to 17-14. Mullen hit Kahlil Hill on a slant for an 8-yard scoring play with 9:30 to play.
The Cyclones struck on their first offensive play, with Moses taking a reverse around the left end for a 58-yard touchdown run. Several Iowa players appeared to have him hemmed in on the sideline about 10 yards from the end zone, but Moses cut to the inside to evade two tacklers and score.
Iowa came right back on Scott Mullen's 4-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Kasper with 9:19 left in the quarter. The score was the Hawkeyes' first opening-period touchdown since Oct. 30, 1999, when Mullen and Kasper hooked up for an 18-yard strike at Ohio State.
Iowa State went ahead for good with 5:12 remaining in the opening period on Mike McKnight's 22-yard field goal. McKnight, who was perfect on all seven of his placekicks last week against UNLV, missed two field goals on consecutive possessions.
Iowa kicker Nate Kaeding missed a 39-yarder as the first half ended. And a third-quarter attempt that would've cut Iowa's deficit to 17-10 went awry because of a bad snap.
