AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team fell to Iowa 3-1 in the final regular season game for both teams Sunday. The Cyclones finish the regular season with a 7-10-1 record while the Hawkeyes improve to 11-7-1.
Iowa State struck early when freshman Kristina Baumann took a long pass from Erin Weldon and converted less than three minutes into the game. The Hawkeyes answered back less than ten minutes later when Sarah Lynch scored her tenth goal of the season, assisted by Julie Atkocaitis and Katie Clymer. Iowa took the first half lead in the 33rd minute when Lynch hooked up with Katelyn Quinn. Iowa held a 12-5 advantage in shots at the half.
The Cyclones saw more scoring opportunities in the second half, outshooting the Hawkeyes 12-3 over the final 45 minutes. Iowa was able to capitalize on one opportunity when Quinn scored after Iowa State was unable to clear the ball in the 78th minute. Hawkeye goalkeeper Britta Vogele made ten saves on the day, including six in the second half.
Kristina Baumann scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season and has scored a goal in three consecutive games. She has tallied 11 points in that span. Baumann, Deb Benakis and Nikki Gamble each had four shots for ISU against Iowa. Baumann has 62 shots in 2002, which ranks fourth on the ISU single-season chart.
Cyclone seniors Tiffany Belz, Megan DiGiacomo and Lauren Sims played their final game at the ISU Soccer Complex Sunday.
Iowa State will face Texas in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament, Thursday, Nov. 7 at 5 p.m. The tournament will take place at Blossom Soccer Stadium in San Antonio, Texas.
