AMES, Iowa – Looking for a top-20 win, Iowa State (4-9-4, 0-7-2 Big 12) was unable to spring an upset as it fell to No. 20 BYU (10-3-3, 6-1-2 Big 12) by a score of 3-0 at the Cyclones Sports Complex on Monday evening.
BYU broke through midway through the first half before piling on a pair of scores in the second stanza to pull away with a 3-goal win. The loss marked ISU's seventh time being shut out this season, and it was the third straight game the Cyclones were unable to score.
Three Cyclones logged a shot on the night, with both Sophie Forrester and Alaina Villa putting attempts on net. The backline of Makenna Marshall, Erin Hopewell and Sydney Walters played a full 90 minutes, joining keeper Eme McClenahan as players who went the distance. McClenahan finished with seven saves.
Nine Cougars registered multiple shot attempts on the evening, with both Mia Goettsche and Mika Krommenhoek leading the way with three apiece. Avery Frischknecht, Presley Freeman and Mattyn Summers-Oviatt were the goal scorers for the Cougs and they were joined by four other point-scorers who earned assists. BYU played three keepers as they all pitched a combined clean sheet.
The Cougars held the edge in shots, 24-3, as well as in corner kicks, 9-3, as they dictated the pace. The Cyclones collected more saves than BYU, 8-2, and fouled less than the Cougs, 5-8.
How it Happened
BYU controlled the early momentum in the first half, attempting eight shots in the first 20 minutes of action before finally breaking through in the 25th minute to go up 1-0.
At the half, BYU held a 1-0 lead thanks in part to its 12-1 shot advantage and 5-3 corner kick edge.
The second half was more of the same for the Cougar attack, as BYU converted a pair of scores in the 75th and 77th minutes to extend its lead to three before leaving Ames with a 3-nil win.
