TUCSON, Ariz. – Looking for its third-consecutive Big 12 result, Iowa State (4-6-4, 0-4-2 Big 12) fell short of the mark as it lost to Arizona (5-5-4, 2-1-3 Big 12) on the road Sunday afternoon.
The Cyclones battled back from a 1-nil halftime deficit as Megan Walters equalized in the 53rd minute. A second score from the Wildcats in the 73rd minute gave Arizona the lead, which they would then hold on to claim the win.
Regan John led the Cyclone attack, attempting three shots on the afternoon, while Walters, Lucy Froitzheim and Morgan Goodman each had two. For Walters, the goal was her third of the season, tying her with fellow sophomore Alaina Villa for the team lead. The Cyclone offense placed 66 percent of its shots on goal, but was only able to convert one. In net, Eme McClenahan went the distance, allowing two goals while picking up three saves.
Ella Weathersby paced the Wildcat offense with three attempts, while both Kyleigh Johnson and Lainey Swanson picked up goals. Between the pipes, Sofia Cortes-Browne got the start, pitching a shutout first half with a save. Laurynn Ziller took over in the second stanza, conceding one goal but saving five attempts.
For the first time in the Big 12 slate, ISU outshot its opponent as it held a 12-11 shot advantage over Arizona, and ISU placed eight shots on goal to UA's six. The Wildcats held the edge in saves (6-3) and corner kicks (6-1) in the win.
How it Happened
After 18 minutes of traded possessions, Iowa State logged the first shot of the game with 18:44 on the clock as John's attempt went off target. Arizona's second attempt of the match came in the 25th minute as Lainey Swanson converted off of a feed from Mireya Stephenson to put the Wildcats in front.
ISU took four more shots in the stanza, seeing a pair saved, as it would go into the break trailing by one. Each side had five shots, two saves and a corner kick apiece in the opening half.
Iowa State came out of the gates with a purpose in the second half, firing four shots in the first seven minutes of action. The fourth shot came off a carom and from the foot of Walters, who knocked it in to equalize.
Later in the half, the Wildcats would score in the run of play as Johnson used a feed from Weathersby to put Arizona back in front. ISU was unable to find a second score and would see its two-match result streak snapped in Tucson.
Fannon's Thoughts
"We're very disappointed with today's result. It was a game we had every opportunity to win, and we managed to give it away."
