ORLANDO, Fla. – In the final contest under the direction of Coach Matt Fannon, Iowa State (4-11-4, 0-9-2 Big 12) fell in the season finale at UCF (11-4-2, 6-3-2 Big 12) by a score of 7-0.
The Knights built upon five first-half goals, netting another pair in the second stanza, to head into postseason play with some momentum. For ISU, the 7-0 setback ties the second-worst margin of defeat in program history.
Alaina Villa was the Cyclones' most aggressive player on the night, accounting for three of the team's seven shots. Four other ISU athletes recorded one attempt, but none of the seven were placed on goal. Both Eme McClenahan and Sara Gavagan saw time between the posts on the night.
Naomi Clark was the game's standout, as UCF's forward finished with six points, notching both a brace and a pair of assists. Five other Knights collected goals, with Gabi Berchon tying Clark in shot attempts with five. Katsi Bengoa was the main table setter for UCF, as she ended the night with three assists to lead all players. In net, Kaina Cesar and Virginia Green combined for a shutout.
UCF outshot the Cyclones, 26-7, placing 12 shots on goal to ISU's none. The Knights also had more corner kicks than Iowa State, owning a 9-1 edge, though the Cyclones did win the save battle, 5-0.
How it Happened
The Knights got things started early, as Clark punched in the first score of the evening in the seventh minute. After review, the goal stood. 17 minutes later, UCF struck again to go up 2-0. After yet another review, the call stood. A third Knight goal came in the 25th minute, but this time a review took the score off the board.
After that, UCF poured it on, scoring three times in the final 20 minutes of the stanza to take a commanding 5-0 lead into the break.
There was no letting up in the second half for Central Florida, as the team put two more on the board before mass-subbing its lineup around the 70-minute mark.
