AMES, Iowa (AP) - Jake Sullivan scored 27 points and Iowa State regained its cool after tempers flared on both sides in beating Colorado 89-63 Wednesday night to break an eight-game losing streak.
The game was stopped for 10 minutes early in the second half by a flareup that resulted in the ejection of Iowa State's Jared Homan and two technical fouls against Colorado. It finished without further trouble.
Tyray Pearson added 23 points, Shane Power 15 and Omar Bynum 14 for Iowa State (10-15, 2-9 Big 12), which won for the first time since beating Missouri on Jan 9. Sullivan matched his career high with six 3-pointers
Colorado (13-9, 4-7) shot only 37 percent and lost its eighth straight conference road game. Stephane Pelle led the Buffaloes with 17 points and David Harrison scored 16
The trouble started when Iowa State coach Larry Eustachy called a timeout with 18:06 left and his team leading 51-28. Colorado's D.J. Harrison started toward the Iowa State huddle near midcourt and was confronted by Homan.
As they shoved each other, David Harrison, D.J.'s brother, joined the fray and began arguing with Iowa State's Ricky Morgan. Coaches and officials jumped in to separate the teams and no punches were throw.
The Harrisons each received a technical and Sullivan made all four free throws. Homan, who had not been in the game at the time, was ejected for leaving the bench.
D.J. Harrison threw his wrist band toward the crowd as the officials tried to restore order. He was booed loudly whenever he touched the ball after that and fouled out with 8:38 to play, leaving to a long, derisive ovation.
With Pearson's inside play complementing Sullivan's outside shooting, Iowa State had no trouble staying in control after that
Sullivan's sixth 3-pointer finished a 7-0 run that stretched the lead to 62-32. The closest Colorado got after that was 74-51 on Blair Wilson's 3-pointer. Iowa State came back with six straight points, including a jumper by Sullivan, to go up 80-51 and coasted from there.
Iowa State shot 59 percent in the first half and made 10 of its first 12 shots, including eight straight in one stretch. The last seven came in a 16-0 run that included eight points by Pearson and two 3-pointers by Sullivan and put the Cyclones up 24-8.
They led by as many as 27 points in the first half and were up 49-24 at halftime.
