COLUMBIA, Mo. - The Iowa State softball team defeated Loyola, 7-0 and fell to Missouri, 6-4 in the second day of the Missouri Tournament. Erica Martinez hit her fifth home run of the season moving her into first place tie with Erin Woods on the Iowa State all-time home run list with 17 home runs.
A Martinez RBI single and a RBI double by freshman Misty Kimura gave the Cyclones a 2-0 going into the bottom of the sixth inning.
ISU expanded the lead scoring five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Ashley Core walked and advanced to second on a Julia Lindsey single. Adi Blackmon reached on an error to load the bases. Martinez hit her second grand slam of the season to give Iowa State a 6-0 lead. Freshman Lindsey Herrin hit her third home run of the season to make it a 7-0 ballgame.
Martinez (3-2) picked up the win giving up two hits while striking out 12. Martinez was 2-of-3 with 5 RBI while Kimura was 2-of-4 with one RBI. Herrin was 1-of-4 at the plate with one RBI and Lindsey was 2-of-4 at the plate.
Iowa State fell to Big 12 foe Missouri, 6-4 in the night cap. The Cyclones took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Lindsey lead off the inning with a triple to center field and scored on a Blackmon RBI single.
Missouri answered back tieing the game in the top of the third. Heather Allister scored on a sacrifice fly by Erin Erickson to make it 2-1. Sara Vassmer scored on an error by Lindsey to tie the game, 2-2.
ISU regained the lead in the top of bottom of the third. Blackmon led off the inning with a single and stole second. Herrin hit her fourth career home run and second home run of the day to give Iowa State a 4-2 lead.
The Tigers wasted little time in regaining the lead scoring four runs on three hits in the top of the fourth to make it a 6-4 ballgame.
Jen Bice (4-4) recorded the loss for the Cyclones, giving up six runs on eight hits while fanning five in 4 2/3 innings. Blackmon was 2-of-4 with one RBI while Herrin went 1-of-3 with two RBI. Katie Ruby had two hits while Lindsey and senior Kristin Shipley each contributed a hit.
Iowa State continues play tomorrow in the last day of the Missouri Tournament. The Cyclones will face Connecticut at 10 am and Missouri at 4 pm.
