AMES, Iowa - Erica Martinez hit two home runs and three RBI as the Iowa State softball team fell to No. 9 Oklahoma in a doubleheader today at the Southwest Athletic Complex. ISU lost to the Sooners, 10-6 and 11-1 in the night cap.
Iowa State took an early 2-0 lead in the first game of the doubleheader. Julia Lindsey was hit by the pitch to lead off the inning. Martinez hit her first home run of the day to score Lindsey making it, 2-0. The Cyclones held the lead until the Sooners scored three runs in the top of the third.
ISU answered back scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Adi Blackmon reached on a bunt and advanced to third as Martinez reached on an error by Oklahoma centerfielder Erin Evans. Freshman Lindsey Herrin hit her seventh home run of the season to give Iowa State a 5-3 lead. Oklahoma answered back scoring three runs in the top of the fifth inning to take a 6-5 lead.
The Cyclones tied the game in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Martinez home run.
Oklahoma proved too much for ISU as the Sooners scored three more runs in the top of the sixth and added another run in the top of the seventh to make it a 10-6 ballgame.
Martinez (6-6) recorded the loss for ISU allowing 10 runs on 10 hits while fanning 10 batters in seven innings. Martinez was 3-of-3 at the plate with three runs and three RBI. Herrin was 2-of-4 with three RBI. Amberly Lessenger was 2-of-3 at the plate while Lindsey, Blackmon, and Katie Ruby each contributed a hit.
Iowa State fell to the Sooners in the nightcap, 11-1 in five innings. Oklahoma got on the board first scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. The Sooners added two more in the top of the second and expanded the lead to 10-0 scoring five runs in the top of the third inning. OU added one more run in the top of the fifth.
The Cyclones tried to rally in the bottom of the fifth inning knocking out four hits. Diana Rueter hit a home run to make it a 11-1 ballgame.
Bice (7-6) took the loss for Iowa State, allowing five runs on eight hits fanning three in two innings. Rueter was 1-of-1 at the plate with one RBI. Lindsey, Blackmon, Martinez Herrin, Laura Browning, and Katie Ruby each contributed a hit.
