USAFA, Colo. - The Iowa State soccer team won the Falcon Invitational title in dramatic fashion, with a 2-1 overtime victory over Gonzaga Monday. ISU finished 2-0 at the tournament, which included a 3-0 win over host Air Force on Friday. Air Force defeated Gonzaga 2-1 on Saturday.
Gonzaga opened the scoring against Iowa State in the 36th minute with a goal by Annie Hawkins. Hawkins fired four shots on the day for the Bulldogs. Gonzaga maintained a one-goal advantage until very late in the game. At the 84-minute mark, ISU's Nikki Gamble netted the game-tying goal, assisted by Arlene Samuel. The Cylcones took 13 shots in the second half, but only came away with one goal.
Iowa State took the only two shots in overtime. Gonzaga goalkeeper Ashley Haugen saved the first Cyclone attempt, but Kristina Baumann scored the game-winner seven minutes into the extra period. The goal was Baumann's first as a Cyclone.
Baumann tallied eight shots for Iowa State. It marked the first time any ISU player took eight shots since Nicole Wilcox against Colorado, Oct. 28, 2001. Amy Flores added four shots for ISU. The Cyclones outshot Gonzaga 19-8. ISU's 19 shots was the most since a 19-shot effort vs. Texas Tech, Oct. 26, 2001.
Haugen recorded nine saves for Gonzaga while ISU goalkeeper Beth Chapman saved four Bulldog shot attempts. Chapman was the winning goalkeeper in both Falcon Invitational vicories.
The victory over Gonzaga was Iowa State's first Labor Day soccer game. The Cyclones start the season 2-0 for the first time in program history. ISU improves its all-time overtime record to 7-4-5.
Iowa State will host Arizona, Northern Iowa and Wisconsin in the Cyclone Classic, Sept. 6 and Sept. 8 at the ISU Soccer Complex.
