COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Iowa State soccer team fell 4-2 to Texas A&M Friday. The Aggies, ranked seventh in the nation in the latest Soccer America poll, improve to 6-3 overall with the win while the Cyclones fall to 3-4-1. The game was the first Big 12 conference game for both squads.
Iowa State took an early lead in the 27th minute when freshman Kristina Baumann notched her second goal of the season. Iowa State took the 1-0 lead to halftime as goalkeeper Beth Chapman recorded five saves in the first half. Chapman finished the night with a career-high 11 saves.
Texas A&M took control of the game during a 20-minute spurt in the second half. Linsey Woodard tied the score with her seventh goal of the season at the 59:24 mark. The Aggies took the lead less than ten minutes later when Heather Ragsdale scored off an assist from goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak. Ragsdale added another goal at the 80-minute mark to give Texas A&M a two-goal edge. Each team scored a goal in the game's final ten minutes, with Cristina Echavarry scoring for the Aggies and Arlene Samuel scoring her second goal of the season for ISU.
The Aggies held a 34-5 overall advantage in shots. The 34 shots by Texas A&M was the most by an ISU opponent since Texas A&M outshot ISU 35-6 in a 4-1 Aggie victory on Oct. 3, 1999. Iowa State's two goals against Texas A&M Friday are the most scored by the Cyclones in the ISU-TAMU series, which the Aggies now lead 8-0-1. ISU's two-goal output is the most in a Cyclone defeat since a 4-3 loss to Missouri on Oct. 15, 1999.
Iowa State continues its road trip against fourth-ranked Texas at 1 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29.
