COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Texas A&M defense held Iowa State to just one shot in each half as the Aggies prevailed 2-0 in Big 12 soccer action Friday. Iowa State falls to 4-7-3 overall and 1-4-1 in the Big 12. The fourth-ranked Aggies (11-1-2, 4-0-2) extend their conference unbeaten streak to 23 games and and their home unbeaten streak to 24 games.
Texas A&M scored first in the 22nd minute on an unassisted goal by Laura Probst. The Aggies added another goal with seven minutes remaining in the half when Becky Olson scored off an assist from Kat Krambeer. Texas A&M had a 15-1 advantage in shots in the first half, with Kristina Baumann taking ISU's lone shot of the half. Iowa State goalkeeper Beth Chapman grabbed four saves in the first half.
The Aggies again had the offensive edge in the second half, outshooting Iowa State 11-1. Deb Benakis took the Cyclones' only second-half shot. Texas A&M finished with a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Iowa State's total of two shots is its fewest of the season, and Texas A&M's 26 shots is the most by an ISU opponent this season. The Cyclones' two-shot output is the lowest since ISU managed just one shot against Illinois in the opening game of the 2001 season.
Chapman collected five saves and has 218 for her career, which is 23 behind ISU all-time leader Lynley Hilligoss. ISU redshirt senior Lindsey Lees appeared in her 71st career game, which ranks first among active Cyclones and sixth in school history.
Iowa State played its fourth ranked opponent in the last six games. The Cyclones are 1-2-1 against ranked foes in 2003, the best mark in program history. Texas A&M improves to 9-0-1 against Iowa State and has won more games against ISU than any other opponent.
Iowa State will return home to host Texas on Sunday, Oct. 19, at 1 p.m.
