AMES, Iowa - The Missouri soccer team came from behind once in each half and scored a 4-3 victory over Iowa State Friday. With the win, Missouri moves to 3-6-1 in Big 12 play and advances to the Big 12 Tournament next week. Iowa State falls to 5-9-4 overall and finishes the conference season with a 2-6-2 mark.
Iowa State jumped out to a two-goal lead in the first 10 minutes of the game for only the second time in school history. The Cyclones struck first just a minute and a half into the game when Jess Villhauer made a move around a defender at the top of the box and found Kate Kirwan to her right. Kirwan fired and scored, giving ISU the early lead. In the ninth minute, Villhauer freed herself in the box and fired a shot that was deflected by Missouri goalkeeper Megan Duncan. Kirwan knocked in the rebound for her team-leading eighth goal of the season.
Missouri answered quickly, as Elyse Nikonchuck broke through the Iowa State defense and scored at the 9:35 mark. Much of the action remained in the Iowa State end as the Tigers outshot the Cyclones 7-1 the rest of the half. The Tigers evened the score with just a minute remaining when Margaret Malm scored off an assist by Aria Hudetz.
Neither team would score again until under 11 minutes remained in the game. In the 80th minute, Iowa State's Kristina Baumann dribbled the ball down the right side toward the end line, made a move past a Missouri defender and sent a pass through the box. Amy Flores was there to tap it in, collecting her fifth goal of the season. Flores has scored a goal in each of the last three games.
Missouri answered quickly again, scoring with six minutes to play. An ISU foul just outside the 18-yard box gave Nikonchuck a free kick. Her attempt was on target, going to the upper-right corner of the goal, where no ISU defender could get to it. The Tigers were not finished and gained another scoring opportunity in the final moments. Karen Bauer launched her seventh corner kick of the day into the box. Kim Hibbert tapped it to Adriene Davis, who knocked it in for the game-winning goal at the 85:26 mark.
"We did a good job creating opportunities today," ISU head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We played a lot more solid in the second half, but some key players made lots of opportunities for them."
Missouri outshot Iowa State 18-15, with Kirwan and Baumann leading the way with four shots each for the Cyclones. With 21 points this season, Kirwan moves into seventh place on the ISU single-season points chart. Her eight goals is the sixth-highest single-season total in ISU history.
Iowa State closes the season at home Sunday, Nov. 2, at 2 p.m., when Minnesota comes to town. Seniors Beth Chapman, Lindsey Lees and Arlene Samuel will play their final game for Iowa State.
