MADISON, Wis. - On a rain-soaked opening night of the Wisconsin Invitational, the Iowa State soccer team battled tournament host Wisconsin to a 1-1 double-overtime tie. Iowa State moves to 2-1-1 on the season and the Badgers, winners of their previous four games, are 4-1-1 in 2003.
Iowa State struck quickly, scoring in the opening minute of the game. Junior defender Erin Weldon found sophomore Kristina Baumann for her first goal of the season 55 seconds into the contest. Baumann, ISU's goals and points leader in 2002, notched her eighth career goal. The Cyclones have scored in the opening two minutes twice in 2003.
Wisconsin answered in the 33rd minute when Emily Kintzer connected on her first goal of the 2003 season, assisted by Marisa Brown. Wisconsin outshot ISU 8-3 in the opening period.
The Badgers continued on the offensive attack in the second half, taking 14 shots to Iowa State's three, but neither squad found the back of the net. Cyclone senior goalkeeper Beth Chapman made four of her seven saves in the second half.
Neither team took a shot in the first overtime period, and Wisconsin held a 3-2 edge in shots in the second extra session. The Badgers finished the game with a 25-8 advantage in shots. Katy Lindenmuth led the way with five shots. Deb Benakis led Iowa State with a season-high four shots, and Baumann added two attempts.
Chapman has 20 saves on the season while allowing four goals. With the overtime tie, Iowa State extends its overtime unbeaten streak to five games. ISU was 3-0-1 in overtime in 2002. The Cyclones bring an eight-game losing streak against Big Ten opponents to an end.
Nebraska and Michigan tied 1-1 in the opening game of the Wisconsin Invitational Friday. Iowa State will face Michigan Sunday at 11 a.m.
