AMES, Iowa - A physical ISU soccer team matched No. 9 Texas A&M shot for shot, however the visiting Aggies prevailed with a 1-0 victory over the Cyclones Sunday afternoon at the ISU Soccer Complex. It was Iowa State's first home match since Oct. 3. With the loss, Iowa State falls to 7-10-0 on the season and 4-5-0 in Big 12 play. Texas A&M improves to 13-5-0 overall and 8-2-0 in league action.
"Our girls are disappointed," said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "I think they showed a lot of heart and character and played well as a team today."
In the first half, the Cyclones outshot the Aggies, 4-2, and also tallied more corner kicks, 3-1, but Texas A&M capitalized on one of its shots when Aggie forward Madison Klovstad got an assist from teammate Kat Krambeer and nailed a shot from 10 yards out from the left side for the game's only goal. ISU had three solid opportunities to tie the score in the first half, but Aggie goaltender Kati Jo Spisak nabbed all three shots by Renee de St. Aubin, Kate Kirwan and Kristina Baumann.
In the second half, ISU continued to apply the pressure to the Aggie defense with seven shots, including two that were saved by Spisak and a Stephanie Kaphingst laser shot that hit the crossbar and went over the back of the net. Texas A&M didn't let up either as it had nine second-half shots with ISU goaltender Joanna Haig collecting five saves.
The ISU offense was paced by Baumann with two shots on the afternoon, both on goal, giving her a team-leading 35 for the year. Freshman Brittanie Waddell, de St. Aubin and Kirwan each had a shot on goal. Haig had six saves on the day.
"I think Texas A&M is a fantastic team," Hornbacher said. "Hats off to them. I respect them but I thought we played outstanding today. It's disappointing for the team because we gave them a run all game. We had them on their heels. I think our team is peaking at the right time. I give credit to Texas A&M because they got the win, but I think our girls are getting better week by week. We have to continue to finish our regular season strong."
Iowa State finishes the Big 12 regular season on Friday night when it takes on No. 6 Kansas at KU's Jayhawk Soccer Complex. The match begins at 3 p.m. The Cyclones conclude the 2004 regular season on Sunday with a 1 p.m. match against intrastate rival Iowa at the ISU Soccer Complex.
