No. 2 Gym Dogs Defeat No. 8 Cyclones

ATHENS, Ga. -- The No. 8 Iowa State women's gymnastics team suffered its first loss of the 2004 season Friday night against No. 2 Georgia (196.625-197.400). ISU's record is now 8-1 overall and 3-0 Big 12 Conference action.

Cyclone teammates Laura-Kay Powell (39.475), Erin Dethloff (39.450) and Janet Anson (39.325) grabbed second, third and fourth place in the all-around competition. Chelsa Byrd of Georgia took first with a 39.80.

Anson and Powell placed in a four-way tie for third on vault (9.875), along with Gym Dogs Ashley Kupets and Kinsey Rowe. Byrd finished second (9.95) and her teammate Brittany Smith claimed first with a perfect 10.0.

Byrd, Rowe and Cory Fritzinger of Georgia shared first-place honors on bars (9.95). Freshman Katie Lasher of Iowa State scored a career-high 9.90 to take first place.

There was a Gym Dog three-way tie for first on beam between Rowe, Smith and Sierre Sapunar (9.95). Byrd claimed fourth (9.90). Georgia's Marline Stephens shared fifth with Powell and Dethloff (9.875).

ISU outscored Georgia 79.475-48.650 on the floor. Powell and Anson shared firth in the event (9.90). In fourth was Smith (9.925). Dethloff matcher her career-high score to finish third (9.95). Byrd (10) and Stephens (9.975) claimed first and second.

The Cyclones will next play host to intrastate rival the University of Iowa on Friday, March 12, at 7 p.m. at Hilton Coliseum.
