SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Iowa State freshman Stephanie Kaphingst scored the first collegiate goal of her career, but UC Santa Barbara scored twice in an eight minute span in the second half to defeat the Cyclones, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in Santa Barbara. With the loss, ISU falls to 1-5 on the season, while UCSB improves to 3-3.
Iowa State got on the board first with Kaphingst's goal at the 35:45 mark when she took a feed from freshman Renee de St. Aubin and knocked the ball over the outstretched arms of UCSB goalkeeper Jamie Considine. ISU was out shot in the first half, 9-4, but took a 1-0 lead into the lockerroom due in large part to the great play of freshman goalkeeper Laura Boyer, who had four first-half saves.
"Laura played a great game," said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "She was solid and confident and she stepped up when we needed her to."
Boyer and the Cyclones continued their tough defense to start the second half, but at 59:19, UC Santa Barbara's Randi Johns scored an unassisted goal from 30 yards out on the left side to tie the game. Less than eight minutes later, UCSB's Jennifer Borcich took the ball at the top of the penalty box and passed it to teammate Kathleen Prieto who nailed a hard shot into the center of the goal past a leaping Boyer for the tiebreaker and the 2-1 win.
"I'm disappointed that we couldn't hold the lead when we got one today," Hornbacher said. "We had a lot of players contributing today and I've very confident that we'll use this as a learning experience and pull things together and tackle the rest of our games."
UCSB outshot ISU in the match, 19-6, and held 10-0 advantage in corner kicks. Boyer finished the match with nine saves, many of them from point blank range.
ISU plays host to the 2004 Nike Invitational on Sept. 17-19 at the ISU Soccer Complex. The Cyclones will take on Wisconsin-Milwaukee at 7:30 p.m., Friday night following the Creighton-Youngstown State at 5 p.m.
