AMES, Iowa-- Colorado's Ashlie Mihalcin goal at 10:36 of the game proved to be the only offense the Buffaloes would need en route to a 1-0 victory over Iowa State on Friday night at the ISU Soccer Complex. It was the Big 12 opening game for both teams. The Cyclones drop to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in league play while Colorado improves to 7-1-1 and 1-0 in the Big 12.
Mihalcin took the shot off a Kathryn Grandinetti corner kick and drove it in at the 11 minute mark. Freshman goaltender Jo Haig had four huge saves on the night, including two after Colorado's goal.
Despite the overall score, the Cyclones outplayed the Buffaloes offensively, taking 10 shots to Colorado's seven. ISU was outshot in the first half, 6-5, but picked up the tempo in the second half and rattled off five shots while holding Colorado to only one second-half shot. The Buffaloes led in corner kicks, 5-2.
"There are plenty of positives to take from this game tonight," said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "Colorado is a very strong team and I have a lot of respect for what they've done and how competitive they will be, but our team, I feel, did an outstanding job tonight in many areas of the game. We had so many scoring chances and their goalkeeper came up big. Our players took chances and stuck with the game plan. I really feel there were a lot of periods in the game where we outplayed them."
Sophomores Christine Beatty and Kate Kirwan and freshman Jess Villhauer led the Cyclone offense, registering a team-best two shots, while junior Kristina Baumann and freshman Brittanie Waddell each registered a shot on goal. Baumann's shot-on-goal, late in the game, was right on target, but Colorado's goaltender, Jessica Keller came up with a huge save to end the Cyclone's scoring chances.
"Kristina Baumann did a fantastic job," Hornbacher said. "She came off the bench with seven minutes left to go in the game and I told her she needed to take one chance and how about the chance she had. It was just a rocket and the goaltender came up with a brilliant save."
The Cyclones will play host to Nebraska on Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex at 1 p.m. The Cornhuskers are coming off a 1-0 upset of No. 8 Kansas on Friday night.
