TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- The No. 9 Iowa State women's gymnastics team suffered its first loss of the season at the hands of No. 16 Alabama (195.975-193.750).
Head coach K.J. Kindler said, "Unfortunately we didn't even come close to out potential on bars, however floor and beam were the best I've seen in a long time. Ashley (Alden), Janet (Anson) and Laura-Kay's (Powell) sweep on beam was phenomenal especially against a team like Alabama."
Alabama's Ashley Miles notched a first-place finish on vault (9.925), followed by Alexis Brion with a 9.850 and Cyclone Janet Anson and Shannon Hrozek and Dana Filetti of Alabama (9.775) shared third.
Alabama's Terin Humphrey took first on bars (9.900). Filetti and Miles tied for second (9.850) and Mari Bayer of Alabama was fourth (9.825). Anson notched a season high on bars with a 9.750 to finish sixth for Iowa State.
ISU topped the Crimson Tide in the balance beam competition (48.725-48.450). ISU's Erin Dethloff (9.675), Ashley Alden (9.825) and Jade Kvach (9.500) marked season-high scores on beam. Alden placed first and Anson claimed second with a 9.775. Junior Laura-Kay Powell finished the Cyclone sweep with her third-place finish (9.750).
ISU recorded a season-high 49.125 on floor exercise and each Cyclone gymnast notched an individual season high in the event. Alabama's Miles (9.95) and Brion (9.90) claimed first and second, respectively, while ISU's Anson grabbed third (9.875).
Miles claimed first in the all-around competition with a 39.40. Anson (49.175) finished second for the Cyclones and Filetti took third (49.150).
"I'm proud of the way the team got themselves back together for the second half of the competition, but if we are going to successfully compete against teams of this caliber in the future, we need to work on our confidence level," said Kindler.
The Cyclones will next compete against No. 19 Minnesota at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22, in Minneapolis.
