AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team completed a weekend sweep on Senior Day with a 3-0 shutout of Oklahoma at the ISU Soccer Complex on Sunday, clinching a spot in the Big 12 Tournament. With the win, Iowa State can do no worse than a No. 6 seed in the conference tournament, held Nov. 2-6 in San Antonio, Texas.
"Our team really rallied around our seniors," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We knew we could clinch a spot in the conference tournament with a win today and we just kept coming after them. We did a great job of putting them away in the second half."
All four of Iowa State's seniors, Kristina Baumann, Deb Benakis, Amy Flores and Leslie Hansell all had a hand in the Cyclones' sixth shutout of the season and their second in conference play. At 5-3-1 in the Big 12 (10-5-3 overall), ISU's 16 conference points are the most in school history.
Iowa State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute as Hansell and Baumann hooked up for the first goal of Hansell's career. Hansell, making her first start of the season and just the fourth of her career, took a cross from Baumann and headed the ball into the back right corner of the net from just inside the 8-yard box. The assist was Baumann's second of the weekend and her fourth of the season. She now has 16 assists, third on the ISU all- time list.
"I'm so excited for Leslie that she had the game-winning goal in the last game of her senior year," Hornbacher said. "She made the most of her opportunity and her goal really ignited us."

Sophomore Beth Passman scored her first goal of the season in the 66th minute, launching a shot from 30 yards out that just cleared the outstretched arms of Sooner goalkeeper Jennifer Nichols. Freshman Meghan Smith countered just three minutes later, with a perfectly-placed shot from the top of the 18-yard box for her third goal of the season. Freshman Hannah Swanbom collected both assists on the second-half goals, her first of the season, respectively.
Iowa State out-shot OU 21-14 for the match, including an 11-3 margin in the second half. The 21 shots were the most this season in conference play, beating the 19 shots ISU took in its 4-1 win over Oklahoma State Friday night.
"We need to continue to execute and continue to create scoring opportunities like we have been," Hornbacher said. "Right now we are playing our best soccer of the season and peaking at the right time."
Iowa State now has 22 goals in Big 12 play this season, the most any Cyclone team has ever scored in 10 years of soccer.
With the win, ISU travels to Lincoln, Neb., on Friday for a 4 p.m. match that will determine the Cyclones' seed in the Big 12 Tournament.
