BOULDER, Colo. - After scoring the most goals in a conference game in program history Friday in a 6-2 victory at Texas Tech, the Cyclone offense stalled, losing 4-0 to Colorado on Sunday. The Buffs used three goals in the first 31 minutes of play to end the Cyclones' streak of six games without a loss. ISU had been 5-0-1 during that span.
"Colorado really used their speed and capitalized on their opportunities," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "They were very organized in their attack. We didn't account for their runners and left them unmarked in the box too many times. We need to work hard to correct our mistakes and our team needs to respond."
The Buffaloes got on the board early in the ninth and 12th minutes as Nikki Keller scored her third and fourth goals of the season, respectively. The Colorado offense did not stop there as Katie Griffin scored before half to give CU a 3-0 advantage heading into the locker room.
The Buffs tacked on another goal from Griffin in the second half, her fourth of the season, to put the game well out of reach with 11 minutes left in the match.
Cyclone goalkeeper Joanna Haig tied a season high for saves with eight in the loss as Colorado outshot Iowa State 23-6 for the match. The 23 shots were the most by an ISU opponent since Texas took 26 in a 1-0 overtime win vs. ISU on October 22, 2004.
Iowa State, who was ranked 13th in the Central Region by Soccer Buzz Magazine, drops to 6-3-2 (1-1, Big 12) on the season, while CU, who was ranked 12th by the same publication, improved to 4-4-2 (1-1, Big 12).
The Cyclones will return to action on Friday as they host their Big 12 home-opener against Missouri at 7 p.m., at the ISU Soccer Complex.
