Cyclone Soccer Defeats Iowa, 2-1

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Iowa State used two quick goals in the first 20 minutes of the game from senior forward Amy Flores and sophomore midfielder Renee de St. Aubin to defeat rival Iowa, 2-1 on Wednesday. Iowa State now takes a 2-0 lead in the 2005-06 Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series.

The Cyclones came out of the gates strong, firing two shots in the opening minutes of the match. ISU got on the board for just the second time this season when Flores volleyed a cross from freshman forward Meghan Smith and rifled it into the back of the net. Flores netted the 13th goal of her career on the play as Smith recorded her second assist in three games.

"Meghan delivered a beautiful pass across the box and Amy took her line to the post and put herself in a real good position to finish," Iowa State head coach Rebecca Hornbacher said. "We did a phenomenal job of getting after Iowa early."

ISU kept the pressure on as Renee de St. Aubin booted in the first goal of her career at the 19:05 mark, putting the Cyclones up 2-0. Iowa State would never look back.

Iowa's Manon Engelhardt cut the deficit in half with just under 10 minutes to go in the first half on an assist from Stephanie Hyink, but it would not be enough.

The second half proved to be a defensive struggle as ISU out-shot Iowa 5-2 in the second period as the Hawks were unable to make up the difference.

"We really had a lot of motivation going into tonight's game knowing we were representing Iowa State in the (Hy-Vee) Cy-Hawk Series," Hornbacher said. "Our team put together two solid periods of strong offensive and defensive efforts and this win should give us some momentum heading into this weekend."

Cyclone goalkeeper Joanna Haig faced just eight shots on goal for the match, needing a mere three saves to record her second win of the season and the 10th of her career. Iowa State out-shot the Hawks 16-11 for the match.

Sophomore Erin Witte led the Cyclones with four shots in the game, doubling her total for the season.

Iowa goalkeeper Lindsay Boldt made six saves in the loss.

Iowa State improves to 2-2-1 on the year while Iowa drops to 1-3-1.

Up next for Cyclones are home matches against South Dakota State at 7 p.m. on Friday and Colorado College on Sunday at 1 p.m.
