NORMAN, Okla. -- Iowa State's defense demonstrated its steady improvement but Adrian Peterson rushed for 183 yards and two touchdowns as the Cyclones fell to No. 22 Oklahoma before 84,152 fans in Memorial Stadium. Iowa State, now 3-4 overall and 0-3 in the Big 12 Conference, plays host to Texas Tech Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Jack Trice Stadium. Oklahoma is 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Big 12 Conference. The game was costly to both teams. Iowa State lost senior all-Big 12 cornerback DeAndre Jackson with a knee inury that has likely ended his collegiate career. Peterson, a Heisman Trophy hopeful, broke his collarbone diving into the end zone on a 53-yard TD run that ended the game's scoring.
"Oklahoma won the battle at the line of scrimmage," Iowa State head coach Dan McCarney said. "Our defense played well nearly the entire game. Losing one of the great players in school history, DeAndre Jackson, deprives us of a great leader. We hurt for him."
Oklahoma jumped out to a 14-0 lead with Peterson scoring on a 6-yard run and Malcolm Perry catching a 9-yard TD pass from Paul Thompson in the game's first 15 minutes. Then Iowa State struck back.
Iowa State quarterback Bret Meyer drove Iowa State 80 yards in six plays with the climax coming on a 31-yard TD pass to wide receiver Todd Blythe that made it 14-7 (Culbertson kick) with 1:44 remaining in the first quarter. The first half ended with a 58-yard run by Stevie Hicks, the longest dash of his career. The officials ruled time had expired with the play and the first half was over.
Oklahoma led 24-7 at halftime
The Cyclones cut the lead to 14 points (23-9) when linebacker Tyrone McKenzie tackled Peterson in the Sooner endzone with 11:32 left in the third quarter after Peterson had fumbled and then thrown the pigskin out of the back of the endzone. McKenzie finished the game with a contest-high 15 tackles. Shawn Moorehead, Brent Curvey and Ahtyba Rubin recorded sacks for ISU.
Meyer threw an interception in the third quarter that Oklahoma convereted into the second of two field goals by Garret Hartley for a 27-7 Sooner advantage.
