AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team fell to No. 25 Colorado, 1-0, Sunday at the ISU Soccer Complex. Elise Reid, Brittanie Waddell and Erin Witte led the Cyclones with three shots each. Iowa State had one of its best offensive matches this season, taking a strong 19 shots, but weren't able to convert a goal against the Buffs.
On the first play of the game, the Cyclones drove the ball straight towards the CU goal. Leslie Hill crossed the ball to Erin Witte, whose shot missed wide left. The first 10 seconds told the story of the whole match, where the Cyclones would be troubled by missing shots by mere inches.
The first 20 minutes of the contest, the Cyclones dominated the offense at one point, leading 12-2 in shots. In the first half Leslie Hill dribbled the ball up field, through five CU defenders and made a pass in the box to Witte. Her shot bounced off the crossbar. Waddell grabbed the rebound and fired a shot that sailed just high of the net.
Iowa State had a 13-8 shot lead in the first half and had two shots bounce off the cross bar, but could not score. The match remained scoreless at halftime.
Colorado came out in the second half with more offense, taking several long range shots to get its offense rolling. The Buffs took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute when Allison Kidd dribbled in to the left side of the box and dropped a pass to Nikki Marshall, who put the ball in the back of the net. Marshall scored her 10th goal of the season.
Iowa State fought to come from behind. Senior Jess Villhauer fired a shot from 20 yards out that, once again, hit the crossbar, the Cyclones' third heart-breaking opportunity of the game.
"The ball is going to bounce the right way," said head coach Rebecca Hornbacher. "We just have to keep on doing what we are doing and fighting together. We have to keep on fighting for points. It's going to be a battle to the very end."
Colorado goalkeeper Kirstin Radlinski (2-3-1) had 10 saves in her first solo shutout of the season. ISU goalkeeper Ann Gleason had seven saves in the match.
With the win, Colorado earned its second win in the conference, improving to 2-4-1 and 8-5-2 overall. Iowa State's overall record fell to 6-11-0 and 2-5-0 in the Big 12.
Iowa State will face a tough road trip next weekend, matching up against two nationally ranked teams. The Cyclones play at No. 8 Texas A&M on Friday at 7:30 p.m. and at No. 14 Texas on Sunday at noon.
