AMES, Iowa - Ashley Killeen went 2-for-3 and Amie Ford struck out nine hitters in six innings to propel Iowa State to its ninth straight win, a 7-2 decision over Canisius in the opening game of the Stetson Tournament on Saturday morning.
Leading 1-0 in the third inning, Iowa State (11-6) scored four runs to bust open the contest and down the Griffins (4-6).
Killeen singled up the middle to start the rally to score Fallon Johnson, who had reached on a single and stole second base. Pinch runner Whitney Perkins scored on a fielder's choice by Beth Tharp to give the Cyclones their second run of the inning. Katie Reichling then scored on a passed ball and Kristy Olsen singled to drive in Tharp to complete the scoring and give ISU an insurmountable 5-0 lead.
ISU added a pair in the next frame as Tharp and Cary Akins drove in a pair of Cyclone base runners.
Canisius scored a pair of solo runs in the third and fifth innings but Ford used timely strikeouts to end any potential Griffin rallies.
Olsen joined Killeen as the only Cyclones to record multiple hits in the game, going 2-for-4. Tharp had two RBI to lead the Cyclones with Akins, Killeen and Olsen driving in a run each.
Ford (6-3) allowed just four hits and two runs, one of which was earned, to win her fifth straight from the circle.
Lindsay Garbacz (2-2) got the loss for the Griffins, giving up seven hits and seven runs in four innings.
The Cyclones will face Florida (17-9) of the Southeastern Conference at 11:30 a.m.
