AMES, Iowa - Iowa State pounded out 13 hits to score a Big 12 school-record 14 runs in a 14-6 win over No. 15 Texas A&M in the first game of a doubleheader at Southwest Athletic Complex on Saturday.
The 14 runs in the first game was a Big 12 school record for runs in a game and the most against a conference school since 1989. 17 years ago today, Iowa State scored 14 runs to defeat Oklahoma, 14-1.
The first game saw the Aggies (29-12, 8-3 Big 12) jump out to a 1-0 lead before Ashley Killeen belted her seventh home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field.
A&M got one run back in the fourth when Ronda Smith singled to center to plate Holly Ridley.
The Cyclones bounced back in their half of the fourth when Cary Akins hit a sacrifice fly and Stephanie Mosley had a RBI single to help Iowa State (18-19, 2-5 Big 12) extend its lead to 5-2.
The Aggies were able to regain the lead in the fifth on a grand slam off the bat of Beverly Rowan but the Cyclones rallied for nine runs in the next two frames to give Iowa State the 14-6 win in six innings.
In the fifth, Iowa State had four hits and took advantage of two A&M runs to score three runs. Jennifer Bigbee, Jessica Quade and Katie Reichling each drove in a run in the inning.
The Cyclones scored six runs in the sixth to end the game in the sixth.
Fallon Johnson walked and Kristy Olsen singled to open the inning. Johnson was driven in on a single by Killeen and Olsen scored on a play at the plate after Reichling hit a chopper to first base. A&M first baseman Amanda Scarborough's throw was not in time as Olsen slid in safely at home. Quade drove in Reichling for her second RBI of the game to put ISU on top 11-2.
After Lisa Gorzycki replaced Megan Gibson in the circle, Beth Tharp drew a walk and Jennifer Bigbee roped a double that scored Killeen and Reichling. Tharp raced around third and scored on a throwing error to end the game.
Alyssa Ransom (8-11) got the win for ISU, going the distance despite allowing six runs on 11 hits.
Gorzycki (1-3) allowed eight runs on seven hits in the loss.
Killeen led the Cyclones going 2-for-4 with four RBI while Bigbee added a 3-for-4 performance. Bigbee drove in a career high three RBI in the game.
Rowan led the Aggies, going 2-for-4 with four RBI in the game.
