WACO, Texas - Jessica Quade hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning but No. 18 Baylor was able to hold off a late rally by Iowa State to defeat the Cyclones, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at Getterman Stadium.
The Bears jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after two innings and Lisa Ferguson held the Cyclones to one hit through six innings.
Baylor (36-17, 12-5 Big 12) scored a pair of two-out runs on back-to-back RBI hits by Chelsi Lake and Ashley Monceaux to go ahead 2-0 after one inning of play. The Bears added another run in the second on a single by Miriam Romero to extend their lead to 3-0.
Alyssa Ransom relieved Amie Ford and kept ISU (23-25, 5-11 Big 12) in the game, tossing three innings of scoreless ball, until Baylor put two insurance runs on the board in the sixth inning.
The insurance runs proved to be the difference as Quade lifted her second home run of the season to left center, cutting the lead to 5-3 in favor of Baylor.
The Cyclones' rally continued as Stephanie Mosley got on with her second hit of the game and Katherine Cross reached on an error by Baylor third baseman Brette Reagan. Ferguson, who had been relieved by Sarah Hausner, re-entered the game in time to get Beth Tharp to foul out to first base for the final out of the game.
Stephanie Mosley led the way for the Cyclones, going 2-for-3 with a double. Quade recorded three RBI on the homer, lifting her season total to 13.
Ford (10-11) got the loss for ISU after allowing three runs in two innings of work. Ferguson (18-11) picked up her second win of the series for Baylor.
Iowa State will take a week off before heading to Kansas for the final Big 12 series of the season. The Cyclones and Jayhawks will play on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
