LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kassie Humpreys held Iowa State to one hit and Kansas scored five runs in the fifth to defeat the Cyclones, 5-0, at Arrocha Ballpark on Saturday afternoon.
The Jayhawks (29-24, 7-10 Big 12) used three hits, including a three-run homer by Jessica Moppin, to break open a scoreless game in the fifth.
Betsy Wilson walked to lead off the inning and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Humphreys. Val Chapple then reached on an error by the Cyclones to put runners on first and third with one out. Stevie Crisosto got the scoring started with a single to centerfield that scored pinch runner Ashley Goodrich. Destiny Frankenstein then drove in a run with a single before Moppin's homer made it 5-0.
That was all the scoring Kansas would need as Humphreys (14-16) allowed just one single en route to the complete game win. Iowa State did draw five walks from Humphreys, but the junior hurler struck out nine and kept the Cyclones (23-26, 5-12 Big 12) off the board.
Alyssa Ransom (14-16) got the loss for Iowa State, allowing five runs, just one of which was earned, in the game.
Cary Akins broke up the no-hit bid by Humphreys with a fifth inning single that dropped just inside the right field line. Kristy Olsen drew a walk in the fourth and stole her sixth base of the season.
The Cyclones and Jayhawks will play again tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Arrocha Ballpark.
