KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Alex Johnson drove in four runs and Ashley Killeen added two RBI to tie the Iowa State record for career runs batted in as Iowa State defeated UMKC, 11-2, in six innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Cleveland Park in Kansas City, Mo. Tuesday afternoon.
With the win, Iowa State improves to 6-15 on the season. UMKC falls to 1-8 with the loss.
Killeen hit her fourth home run of the year in the fourth inning and drove in another run on a fielder's choice in the sixth inning to equal Erica Martinez's (2000-03) record of 88 career RBI. Killeen, whose homer also moved her into sole possession of second place at ISU with 18 career long balls, went 2-for-4 in the game.
Alex Johnson, a native of Raymore, Mo., also went 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBI in the game. Senior first baseman Jessica Quade hit her third home run of the season, while Jennifer Bigbee added two RBI in the win.
Charissa Carlin (3-3) tossed five innings, allowing two runs on four hits while striking out a career-high seven batters to pick up the win.
The Cyclones trailed 2-0 heading to the fourth inning before using an offensive outburst of seven runs in the inning to take control of the game.
In the fourth, Killeen led off the inning with a homer on the first pitch from Samantha Hurst (0-3). Kristen Karanzias then singled and Bigbee walked. The Cyclones used a pair of passed balls to score pinch runner Holly Jordan before Fallon Johnson doubled to right field to plate Bigbee and make it 3-2 in favor of ISU.
The inning was far from over as Kristy Olsen singled and Alex Johnson hit her second homer, a three-run shot, of the season to make it 6-3. Quade then blasted a two-out homer to cap the scoring.
Iowa State added four more runs in the sixth inning. Courtney Wray walked and stole second to lead off the inning before scoring on a single by Alex Johnson. After Katie Reichling and Quade singled to load the bases, Killeen reached on her record-setting fielder's choice that scored Alex Johnson.
The Cyclones added three more runs in the inning and Reichling came in to relieve Carlin and end the game on the run-rule.
