KANSAS CITY, Mo. ? Ashley Killeen went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs to become Iowa State's career RBI leader and help the Cyclones defeat UMKC, 11-2, in the second game of a doubleheader Tuesday at Cleveland Park.
Iowa State improves to 7-15 with the win, while UMKC falls to 1-9 on the year.
Killeen, a senior from Papillion, Neb., has now driven in 91 runs in her career. She surpassed Erica Martinez (2000-03), who drove in 88 runs in her illustrious career at Iowa State. Killeen became the record holder with a two-run homer, her fifth of the year and the 19th of her career, in the fourth inning.
Amanda Bradberry, a freshman from Kearney, Mo., went 3-for-3 with three RBI. Bradberry hit her first career home run in the game. Another freshman, Alex Johnson, ripped her third homer of the year, a solo shot to lead off the fifth inning.
Amie Ford (3-4) tossed five innings of four-hit ball to pick up the win. Ford allowed just two unearned runs in the contest.
Much like the first game of the doubleheader, UMKC jumped out to a 2-0 lead after Alicia Baker and Kylie Williamson drove in runs in the second inning.
Bradberry got the Cyclone offense going with her solo shot in the third to cut the lead to 2-1.
Iowa State took the lead with a four-run fourth inning, which was highlighted by Killeen's record-breaking two-run homer that scored Katie Reichling, who reached on a single to open the inning. Bradberry then singled to score Kansas City native Ariel Coburn, who singled off UMKC hurler Christie Sotelo (0-1). Fallon Johnson came around to score on an error by the Kangaroos, increasing the Cyclone lead to 5-2 as the teams headed to the bottom of the fourth.
The Cyclones tacked on six more runs in the fifth to go ahead 11-2.
After Alex Johnson led off the fifth with her solo homer, Reichling walked and Jessica Quade singled to run her hit streak to four games. Reichling later scored on a passed ball Killeen then singled through the right side to plate pinch runner Holly Jordan. Bradberry struck again with a double to left center that scored Kelli Huinker, who pinch ran for Killeen. Fallon Johnson and Kristy Olsen drove in runs to cap the scoring in the inning.
Ford retired the Kangaroos in order in the fifth to put the run-rule in effect and give the Cyclones their third straight win.
The Cyclones will be back in action Friday when they face Cal Poly in the first game of the National Invitational Softball Tournament in Sunnyvale, Calif. Cal Poly is coached by former ISU standout Jenny Condon, who still holds numerous records and is the only Iowa State softball player in the Iowa State Athletics Hall of Fame.
