AMES, Iowa ? North Dakota State scored three runs in the first and four in the second to defeat Iowa State, 8-2, and earn a split in Thursday's doubleheader at the Southwest Athletics Complex.
The Bison (22-17) had three hits in the first as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Kelly Cantrell had a run scoring single and Melissa Chmielewski tripled to score Cantrell to make it 2-0. NDSU added another run on a sacrifice fly by Lynnae Foshag.
After the Cyclones (20-28) went down without scoring in the first, NDSU put four more on the board in the second to break the game open. The Bison took advantage of three Cyclone errors and Chmielewski came through again, roping a two-run single to right center to round out the scoring.
The Cyclones had three hits in the third but couldn't score a run as Courtney Wray was gunned down at home on a double by Alex Johnson and Allison Bakke came in to relieve Rasmussen and get out of the inning.
Troup blasted a homer in the fourth inning and Bakke (13-10) allowed just two hits over the next four innings to pick up the win.
Charissa Carlin (9-8) started the game but lasted just 1 1/3 innings to get the loss. The
