AMES, Iowa ? Stephanie Kaphingst, Elise Reid, and Jordan Bishop each scored a goal while Ann Gleason made six saves in net as the Iowa State (5-1-2, 1-0 Big 12) soccer team shut out No. 16 Oklahoma State (6-2-1, 0-1 Big 12), 3-0, Friday night at the ISU Soccer Complex.
The Cowgirls are the highest-ranked team the Cyclones have ever beaten in their 13-year history. The previous best was ISU's 1-0 win over then-No. 18
“Overall, it was just a great team effort,” said Hornbacher. “It was really nice to see so many things come together. Defensively, our team was outstanding. Our back line was solid, all four - Passman, Fader, Purple, Tori - and Ann really came up big. I couldn't be happier right now. But we have to enjoy this win and forget it tomorrow.”
The win also marks the third consecutive season that the Cyclones have opened Big 12 play with a victory. Prior to tonight's match-up, the Cowgirls had allowed just three goals all season.
After the Cyclones weathered an early Cowgirl attack, Kaphingst broke the scoreless tie in the 40th minute with a rocket into the top right corner of the net from 25 yards out. The shot followed a blocked Erin Witte attempt with Kaphingst corralling the rebound and hammering it past the helpless OSU goalkeeper, Erin Stigler.
“Stephanie Kaphingst just really hit a ball on the wire ? a brilliant shot,” said Hornbacher.
Just over 10 minutes into the second half, Elise Reid took advantage of a Cowgirl missed clearance off of Casey Bothwell's pass and beat three defenders and Stigler one-on-one into the lower left corner of the net.
“Elise just had a great effort putting it away,” said Hornbacher. “She's had some other opportunities like that and they've been stopped short, so it was really great to see that she had the composure to slice it and put it away on the keeper.”
The Cyclones capped the night off with beautiful passing which led to Jordan Bishop's first career goal. Brittanie Waddell found Amanda Nimtz at the left post and Nimtz unselfishly deflected it on to Bishop. The freshman then crossed up Stigler with a shot from the right side that caromed off the left post and into the net. Both Waddell and Nimtz earned assists on the play.
“Brittanie Waddell had a great effort to beat her defender and just played a perfect ball to Amanda,” said Hornbacher. “Amanda had just come into the game, and wow did she make an impact right from the beginning. She played a perfect ball to
