AMES, Iowa ? Elise Reid provided the game-tying and game-winning goals as the Iowa State soccer team downed Northern Iowa, 4-1, Friday night at the ISU Soccer Complex. Lauren Odino and Stephanie Kaphingst added insurance as part of a scoring flurry in the final two minutes.
The Cyclones (2-0-0) survived an ominous start to the scoring as a hand ball in the box gave UNI (0-2-1) a penalty kick. Chelsie Hochstedler put the free shot away in the 23rd minute to give the Panthers the lead.
Less than 10 minutes later, Reid found the back of the net on a corner kick. Kicking the ball from the right corner, Reid sailed the ball over several players in front of the near side of the net. Reid put enough English on the kick that it twisted into the far corner.
After more than 50 minutes of scoreless action, the Cyclones put the game away with a three-goal scoring ambush in the final seven minutes. First, Reid netted her second goal at the 83:02 mark, trapping an Erin Witte pass in the box before firing a shot into the top right corner.
Just over five minutes later, Odino took a Brittanie Waddell pass, hesitated as the charging defender passed her, and served the ball into the bottom left corner with
With the final seconds ticking away, Erin Curry launched a corner kick to the far goal post where Kaphingst raced in and knocked it in from just a few feet out with only two seconds left on the clock.
Ann Gleason (2-0-0) made one save to earn the victory. Heidi O'Mara made seven saves in the loss.
The Cyclones outshot UNI, 17-5, including an 11-2 margin in shots on goal.
