AMES, Iowa?Playing with a shortened bench, the Iowa State soccer team could not hold onto a 1-0 halftime lead Friday, falling to Nebraska 3-1 at the ISU Soccer Complex in the Cyclones' season finale.
Iowa State (5-12-2, 0-8-2) raced out to the early lead 17:24 into the match. Senior forward Leslie Hill weaved through the Nebraska defense on the right wing and played a ball across the top of the goal box to junior midfielder Casey Bothwell. Bothwell deposited the shot into the upper-left corner of the net for her second goal of the campaign. Freshman midfielder Laura Wooster was also credited with an assist on the goal. Hill notched her team-high tying fifth assist of the year while Wooster grabbed her fourth on the score.

ISU held its lead at the end of the first half. However, the Cyclones were playing with severely limited options off their bench, illustrated by having to use their reserve goalkeeper as a forward in the second half. Nebraska (10-8-1, 6-4-0 Big 12) took advantage of the Cyclones' shortened bench, making 23 substitutions to Iowa State's eight.
“We came into this game with basically three healthy field-player subs, a goalkeeper sub and another player who's fighting through an injury just trying to play,” first-year coach Wendy Dillinger said. “That definitely was a problem, not having enough people.”
Nebraska's Colleen Goetzmann evened the score 10:54 into the second half for her first goal of the campaign. In the 71st minute Michaella Fulmer gave the Cornhuskers the lead with her fourth goal of the season off a Katie Goetzmann assist. With 2:18 remaining Shay Powell gave Nebraska an insurance goal, with Fulmer gathering the assist.
“The first half was good, we competed, challenged and scored a goal,” Dillinger said. “(The Cyclones) battled and fought, but had breakdowns in the back and gave up three goals in the second half.”
The Cornhuskers held a 19-12 shots advantage while holding a 3-0 corner-kick edge.
Iowa State's Ann Gleason made seven saves, highlighted by a pair of stops on Cornhusker breakaways in the early portions of the match.
The match concludes the careers of three Cyclone seniors. Midfielder Amanda Purple, Hill and midfielder Erin Curry were a part of a class that helped Iowa State make its first NCAA Tournament appearance and record a second-place finish in the Big 12 Conference in 2005.
