FARGO, N.D. ? Iowa State used a five-run first inning and a strong pitching performance by Amie Ford to defeat Wisconsin-Green Bay, 8-0, at the Miken Dome Tournament and improve to 3-0 on the season. It is the best start by a Cyclone squad since 1981, when ISU opened 4-0.
Kelsey Kidwell paced the Cyclones at the plate, going 3-for-4 and scoring a pair of runs while Amie Ford (1-0) picked up the win, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out six in her season debut. Courtney Wray and Sydni Jones had two hits each while Michelle Dettmer added a pair of singles off the bench. Kidwell also stole two bases for the Cyclones.
Anna Bluemel (0-2) took the loss for the Phoenix, allowing eight runs on 11 hits.
Iowa State got on the board early and often as the Cyclones put up five runs in the top of the first. Kidwell hit an infield single and stole second to get things started before advancing to third on a wild pitch that walked Carleigh Berry. After Berry stole second, the two runners advanced on another wild pitch that allowed Kidwell to score the first run and Berry to move to third. Amanda Bradberry then doubled to left field to score Berry and Ariel Coburn walked as ISU led 2-0 with runners on first and second and still no outs. Wray then singled to center and Bradberry scored on an error by the centerfielder. Jones had a run-scoring single and later scored on an error by UW-Green Bay pitcher Anna Bluemel to give ISU a 5-0 lead after one.
The Cyclones and Phoenix went scoreless until the top of the fifth when Coburn roped a double to score Bradberry, who reached on a fielder's choice earlier in the inning. ISU would add one more as Jones scored on an error after getting on with a single.
Iowa State's final run came in the sixth as Dettmer singled to right to score Kidwell. Sophomore hurler Charissa Carlin closed out the win in the bottom of the inning.
The Cyclones will close out tournament play at approximately 2 p.m. this afternoon against North Dakota State.
