MONROE, La. ? Four players drove in two runs each for Iowa State as the Cyclones cruised to a 10-2 victory over Central Arkansas in their first game at the Mardi Gras Classic in Monroe, La. Iowa State improves to 4-1 with the win while Central Arkansas, which picked up its first win earlier in the day, falls to 1-6.
The Cyclones got on the board in the first as Ariel Coburn blasted her first home run of the season, a two-run shot to left center, to lift ISU to a 2-1 advantage. The Bears had grabbed a quick 1-0 lead in the top half of the inning on an infield single by Janae Owens.
After Central Arkansas tied it in the third on a solo homer by Courtney Brock, ISU put two on the board in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases loaded, freshman Carleigh Berry drew a walk to plate Jacquelyn Beatty and make it 3-2 Cyclones. Later in the inning, Kristy Olsen singled through the left side to score Sydni Jones.
The fifth inning was more of the same as Iowa State lit up the scoreboard for six runs in the inning to seal the 10-2 win. The rally started with an infield single by Alex Johnson and walks by Coburn and Amanda Bradberry to load the bases with no outs. After a pitching change, Beatty ripped a double to score Johnson and Coburn, making it 6-2.
The rally continued with the next batter as Courtney Wray roped a triple to right field to score Bradberry and Beatty. Kelsey Kidwell ended the game with a single through the left side to give ISU its third win in six innings or less on the season.
Johnson and Wray each collected two hits for the Cyclones. Wray joined Beatty, Coburn and Kidwell with two RBI each. Coburn's homer was the second of her career. The Cyclones stole four bases in the game and drew eight walks.
Charissa Carlin (1-0) picked up her first win of the season, allowing just two runs on three hits. Carlin struck out five without allowing a walk. On the season, Carlin has seven strikeouts and no walks in 11.1 innings.
Kora Benson (0-2) took the loss for the Bears, allowing seven runs in four innings of work.
