Johnson's Grand Slam Leads ISU Past Redhawks

MONROE, La. ? Alex Johnson hit a grand slam and Charissa Carlin allowed just one run in six innings as Iowa State beat Southeast Missouri State, 8-1, Sunday morning in action at the Mardi Gras Classic.
Johnson's first home run of the season came in the fourth inning as Iowa State (5-1) scored five runs to increase its lead to 7-0.
After ISU scored two runs in the first on a costly two-out error by Southeast Missouri State's shortstop Megan McDonald, Kelsey Kidwell drove in a run before Johnson crushed a full-count pitch by Elaine Fisher (2-1) over the left field wall to make it 7-0 Iowa State.
Both teams scored in the sixth to reach the final score of 8-1. SEMO got a run-scoring groundout from Jennifer Vasquez and Johnson struck again for Iowa State, singling up the middle to score Kristy Olsen, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.
Johnson, a sophomore, finished 2-for-5 with five RBI while freshman Carleigh Berry finished 2-for-3, which included the first double of her career. Carlin improved to 2-0 with the win, striking out six and allowing just three hits over six innings. Amie Ford tossed a scoreless seventh inning for the Cyclones.
Michelle Summers had two of Southeast Missouri State's three hits. Fisher allowed seven runs on six hits in five innings of work. The Redhawks were hampered by five errors.
Iowa State meets Louisiana Monroe at 11:30 a.m., to close out tournament action.
