CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? Iowa State was held hitless through four innings before putting three runs on the board in the fifth to defeat Eastern Kentucky, 3-1, on Friday morning at the Chattanooga Challenge.
The Cyclones (7-1) were unable to get anything going against Eastern Kentucky's Jenn Bledsoe until Courtney Wray's one-out fifth inning single opened the gates to a three-run inning. Following Wray's single, Amanda Bradberry singled to left center. Sydni Jones then roped a double to left field for her third RBI of the season, tying the game at 1-1. ISU wasn't done as Carrie Monroe drove in Bradberry with a pinch-hit single and Kelsey Kidwell reached on a fielder's choice that scored Jones.
Charissa Carlin (3-0) did the rest, dispatching of the Colonels (2-3) in order in the sixth. Carlin, who struck out five while walking just one, allowed a leadoff single to Jena Handley in the seventh but retired the next three hitters to remain undefeated on the season. Carlin has now struck out 17 batters while walking just two on the season.
The Colonels had grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on a double by Shyenne Hussey and then followed the arm of Bledsoe(1-1) until ISU got to her in the fifth. Bledsoe allowed four hits and three runs in the game.
Iowa State will face Chattanooga tonight at 5:45 p.m. at Frost Stadium.
