AMES, Iowa ? The Iowa State gymnastics team earned its first victory of the season, beating in-state rival Iowa, 195.125-193.800, in Hilton Coliseum Friday night. ISU's score was their best output of the season, beating the previous best of 194.550 set on Feb. 10, against Stanford.
“The only way we were going to win was to attack during every event,” ISU head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We were being aggressive all night and not holding back.”
The win adds to the Cyclones' lead in the Hy-Vee Cy-Hawk Series, putting ISU up 18-5 with two events to go. This is Iowa State's second win in the rivalry series in the last three years.
“This is the biggest meet of the year,” Ronayne said. “Winning this meet means more to them then any other meet because it's beating Iowa.”
