FARGO, N.D. ? Iowa State freshman pitcher Rachel Zabriskie burst onto the college softball scene Saturday, tossing a no-hitter in her first game as a Cyclone as ISU defeated Wisconsin-Green Bay, 8-0, in five innings at the Miken Dome Tournament.
Zabriskie (1-0), a native of Austin, Texas, struck out five Phoenix hitters and walked just two as Iowa State won its first season opener since 2002. The no-hitter was Iowa State's first since Zabriskie's teammate Amie Ford blanked Vermont in 2006.
At the plate the Cyclones rattled off nine hits and capitalized on five errors by UW-Green Bay. Amanda Bradberry, Carrie Monroe and Kristy Olsen each had two hits in the win. Bradberry and Courtney Wray tallied stolen bases for the Cyclones.
Monroe, a freshman, tripled to lead off the second inning as Iowa State went on to increase its lead to 4-0 after two. The Cyclones scored two in the first on a Ariel Coburn double and two errors by the Phoenix. After Monroe's second inning triple, Olsen beat out a bunt to load the bases. Bradberry had an RBI single in the inning.
With Zabriskie cruising, Iowa State tacked on four runs in the fifth to end the game. Sydni Jones had a run scoring single in the inning.
The Cyclones and Phoenix will tangle again tomorrow morning, with first pitch slated for 10 a.m.
