“I told Jasmine at the end of the meet she looked like herself tonight,” Iowa State coach Jay Ronayne said. “I like seeing that out of her and it's what I see in practice every day.”
Ronayne saw some other things he liked as well from his squad, especially in its first road test.
“We improved in areas, but we still have some wrinkles that need to be ironed out,” he said. “There was a nice, loud crowd tonight and that helps prepare us for championships. It's the kind of thing we want to train for and this was one step along the way.”
The Cyclones started the meet strong, posting a season-best 49.000 on bars to take the early lead. Auburn tallied a 48.950 on vault. Iowa State's score also was the highest tally it has posted on any event this campaign. Iowa State was buoyed by a career-high-tying 9.850 by senior Ceilia Maccani. The Cyclones also saw solid scores from Thompson (9.825) and junior Jody McKellar (9.825).
In the second rotation, Iowa State (0-3) moved to vault where the Cyclones posted a season-high 48.750. Freshman Michelle Browning pushed ISU with a career-high 9.825. Despite the Cyclones' improved effort, Auburn (2-2) scored a 49.075 on bars to take a 98.025-97.750 lead at the midway point.
The Cyclones moved to floor for the third rotation, while Auburn was on vault. Iowa State's 48.600 could not match the Tigers' impressive 49.125 which saw Auburn's A.J. Mills score a 9.975. Mills' score was the third-highest beam score in Auburn history. ISU was led by Thompson's season-high-tying 9.850. After three rotations, Iowa State trailed 147.150-146.350.
Iowa State posted a season-best 48.875 on beam to close out the competition highlighted by Thompson's 9.900. The Tigers were on floor and tallied a 49.125.
