AMES, Iowa?A strong showing after the midway point of the Iowa State gymnastics team's opener was not enough to propel the Cyclones past 19th-ranked Missouri as the Tigers won 195.050-193.175.
After a shaky start, Iowa State put together a pair of 48.775s on beam and floor. The Cyclones also saw career performances out of junior Megan Barnes, senior Celia Maccani and junior Anna Robey.

“We had half of a meet tonight,” said Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne. “The second half was exactly what we expected and the first half was the exact opposite. We know we are much better on vault and bars than we showed.”
Barnes was rewarded for her solid effort by being named the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” that goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans.
Iowa State opened on vault where Barnes paced the Cyclones with a 9.725 as ISU tallied a 47.800. The Tigers countered with a 48.725 on bars, led by Alicia Hatcher's 9.825.
The two squads switched events for the second rotation as Iowa State moved to bars and Missouri was on vault. The Cyclones scored a 47.825 as Barnes' career-high 9.800 gathered top honors and senior Ashley Kent was close behind with a 9.750. The Tigers posted a 48.900 with Sarah Shire's 9.875 leading the way for Missouri.
The third rotation pitted the Cyclones on balance beam and the Tigers on floor exercise. Missouri put up a 48.825 on floor, as Adrianne Perry led the Tigers with a 9.875. Barnes and Maccani took top honors with 9.825s, a career best for Maccani. The score matched Barnes' career high. Those two scores helped Iowa State tally a 48.775.
ISU closed out its season opener on floor, while Missouri was on beam. Behind a 9.850 from senior Jasmine Thompson and a 9.800 from Robey, the Cyclones tallied a 48.775. The Tigers countered with a 48.600 on beam.
Ronayne feels getting the season-opening nerves out of the way is important for his squad.
“Every season opens with a lot of unknowns,” he said. “Win or lose, getting the opener over is nice and we're looking to the future.”
Barnes led Iowa State in the all-around with a 38.975 while Shire took the all-around title with a 39.350.
The Cyclones return to action next Friday at 7 p.m. for a Big 12 showdown with Nebraska at Hilton Coliseum.
