“I'm real pleased that we are starting to iron out the little problems we have had this season,” Iowa State head coach Jay Ronayne said. “We didn't have to count any falls but still gave away some points on silly things. We need to hit every routine, not just five. When everybody's on, we will be really good, and I know we can get better.”
Iowa State continued its solid night in the second rotation, posting a 48.875 on bars. Senior Ceilia Maccani led the Cyclones with a 9.825, while junior Jody McKellar scored a 9.800. Maccani's tally gave her a tie for the bars title with Oklahoma's Melanie Root and Hollie Vise. The Sooners were strong on vault, posting a 48.900, pushing them to a 98.125-97.825 advantage halfway through the competition.
The Cyclones (1-8; 0-3) were strong on beam (48.725) but Oklahoma (7-3; 2-1) dazzled on floor with a 49.300 to take the 147.425-146.550 lead with one rotation remaining. McKellar and senior Ashley Kent led ISU with each scoring a 9.800. The Sooners' Kristin Smith registered Oklahoma's high score with a 9.900.
Oklahoma showed why it is ranked fifth in the country on beam, scoring a 49.300. Iowa State posted a strong 48.975 on floor to round out the meet. What is proving to be a stellar one-two punch on floor, the duo of Thompson and Browning each scored a career-high-tying 9.900. The tandem also took a share of the event title with Oklahoma's Kristin Smith. ISU junior Anna Robey was also strong, registering a 9.800.
Oklahoma's Haley DeProspero won the all-around title with a 39.300, while Iowa State's Thompson was on her heels with a 39.275. Thompson's effort was rewarded by receiving the “Marie-Rae Sopper Outstanding Performance Award” that goes to the Iowa State gymnast whose performance inspires and captivates the Cyclone coaches, teammates and fans.
“Jasmine looked awesome out there all night,” Ronayne said.
Iowa State travels to Nebraska March 8 to face to the Cornhuskers at 2 p.m. in the Bob Devaney Sports Center.
