Brouillette Sets New Hammer Mark

TEMPE, Ariz. – Three Iowa State competitors qualified for the NCAA Regional competition Saturday at the Sun Angel Track Classic at Arizona State. Junior Lashawn Wright and teammate Ian Warner posted NCAA qualifying times in the women's 200-meter dash and men's 100-meter dash, respectively. Wright had a time of 23.94 and Warner finished first with a time of 10.55, matching the NCAA Regional qualifying mark exactly.
“I felt like we accomplished a lot,” said ISU head coach Corey Ihmels. “We had some good performances and some not so good performances, but there was progress and the athletes had a chance at some good competition.”
Freshman standout Kianna Elahi placed second in the 400-meter hurdles, clocking an effort of 1:01.01. The NCAA Regional qualifying time is a second away from Elahi's time. Monique Hawkins ran to fifth place in the 400-meter dash with a time of 56.58.
Jim Duncan Invitational
The Iowa State throwers took home 10 top-three finishes and multiple personal records from the Drake Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines Saturday. Among the top finishers was Zac Brouillette, who recently broke two Iowa State records, the indoor-weight throw and outdoor-hammer throw. Brouillette captured first place in the hammer throw with a new all-time ISU best effort of 195-03. This exceeds his record-breaking toss of 193-04, set at the Raleigh Relays on March 29. The senior also took second place in the shot put with an effort of 51-09 ¾.
“In Des Moines, there was some good weather and we had a lot of personal records for the throwers,” said Ihmels. “Overall, it was a good weekend.”
Cyclones Robbie Utterback (165-5) and Luke Pinkelman (53-7 ¾) placed first in the discus throw and shot put, respectively. Freshman Dan Newhouse took second in the javelin throw with a mark of 186-05. Senior Jory Zunich earned second place in the men's 1,500-meter run, clocking an effort of 3:55.72.
In women's competition, freshman Danielle Frere took first in the women's shot put with a throw of 48-08. Finishing behind Frere was Britta Christofferson, who had a throw of 47-10 ½.
